This page provides detailed instructions on how to record and save a "Track" (i.e., an electronic breadcrumb trail of where you've been) with your GPS III Plus 1. Set Up Logging on the GPS (note: you only have to so this once, unless you later want to turn off the automatic tracking function for some reason. I just leave mine on all the time)
- Logging will now occur automatically whenever you are moving (with the GPS is turned on, of course); and will continue to record your track until the memory is full. What happens next depends on whether you have the Record Mode set to "Fill" or "Wrap". If you set it to "Fill", your III Plus will stop recording when the memory is full, and you will not get the tail end of the track. In "Wrap" mode, on the other hand, logging will continue after the memory is full, however, the front end of your track will be erased to accommodate the latter end! So either way, on a really long trail, you may not get all of the track on one log. To fix this, save the Active Log before it reaches 100% (see Step 4 below). That will clear the Active Log and it will start recording again. 2. Clear the Active Log (do this wherever you want the recording to begin; e.g., at the trail head):
3. Enter Waypoints along the Track (optional) (e.g., trail head, trail end, points of interest, etc.):
Note: Later on, you may want to edit each waypoint to change the name, symbol, and the comment field with more appropriate date (optional). However (I feel another disclaimer statement coming on!), I do NOT recommend that you do this while trying to drive! Either have your passenger manage the GPS; or, what I usually do is bring along a small voice recorder to "take notes" so that I can edit the waypoints at a later time. 4. Save the Active Log (when you are ready to "stop" recording; e.g., at the trail end):
5. Rename the Saved Log (optional)
Note: I don't bother with Step 5 at all. Because after I create my new Route in Topo USA and upload it back to my III Plus, I clear all of the saved logs anyway.
