One of the simple pleasures I get out of life is driving my Jeep without the doors!
But with the stock mirrors, when
the doors go, so do the mirrors. The decision to replace my mirrors was made easier
but the fact that I (I mean a tree :) ) completely destroyed the passenger mirror on a
trail ride. I tried those mirror relocation brackets that mount to the windshield
hinges, but they didn't work very well. You can't see the passenger side mirror at
all with the door uppers installed! I decided on a set of CJ-style mirrors; the
driver mirror sticks out to the left side and the passenger mirror kind of sticks
up. They look a little funky, but they work well. These mirrors mount
into existing holes on the side of the windshield hinges. But that put them
a little high for my taste, so I drilled and tapped two new holes in the front of
the windshield hinge (which allowed me to position them lower). This also allows the
mirrors to be folded completely out of the way of mirror-eating trees on the
trail! The driver's side mirror is visible through the door upper. To see the
passenger side mirror, however, you look through the bottom right corner of the
windshield. They vibrate a bit more than the stock mirrors, so the image is a bit
fuzzy. But hey, that's a Jeep Thing . . . you understand!

Although I love to drive my Jeep without the doors, if the weather is bad during part of my trip, I like
having doors! But then later, when I want to remove them, there's no place to store
those big fat factory steel half doors. The solution is soft doors, which Bestop
took forever to develop for the TJ! The two soft doors and their matching
uppers are very reasonably priced. All four pieces, when sandwiched together, are
still thinner than only one of the factory doors, and store easily behind the rear seat!
Each door and upper is
adjustable so that you can get an excellent fit. And the map pockets inside of each
door holds twice what the little molded plastic pockets hold on the factory doors.
Each upper has a velcro'ed flap along the bottom, which overlaps the top of the lower
door. It is very effective at keeping out the wind and rain. The doors take
seconds to install and remove, and they look really cool! If I had any
complaints, it would have to be that the doors "flap" considerably
at highway speeds (i.e., they're noisy!). But, hey . . . that's just
another one of those Jeep Things . . . You Understand!
